Eligibility
The
Velvet Room Boutique “Design A Dress” contest is open to aspiring
designers who have less than two years trade or professional
experience and are 18 years or older.
Design Specifications
Choose one of the below events and submit a design for a dress that
fits the criteria described. Participants may include sketches,
pictures, flats and fabric selections in their submissions.
Participants may submit designs for one or more of the categories
for a maximum of three submitted designs.
Gala: Design a floor length dress for a black tie gala or
awards night
(size 6)
Wedding: Design a dress that can be worn to a daytime wedding
and evening reception (size 8)
*a dress for a quest not the bride
Birthday: Design an age appropriate dress that the Birthday
Gal can wear to her 40th or 50th Birthday
Bash. (Curvy size 8)
Initial
submissions
Initial submissions must be received by the Velvet Room Boutique on
or before 6:00pm on Friday, March 26th, 2010 and must include:
Semi-finalist
selection
Semi-finalists will be chosen for their creativity, professionalism
and ability to design a dress with the philosophy of the Velvet Room
Boutique in mind. Semi-finalists will be chosen from each dress
category and will be notified by phone on or before March 31st,
2010. Each semi-finalist will receive a Velvet Room Celebrity Bag
filled with gifts and services.
Production
Semi-finalists must complete the construction of their designs and
deliver the garment(s) in person to the Velvet Room Boutique by
6:00pm on April 21st, 2010.
In addition to the People’s Choice Awards outlined below, our panel
of judges will select designs from each category to advance to the
next level of competition.
People’s Choice Awards
During Kerrisdale’s Annual Carnival Days on April 23rd and 24th, all
semi-finalists’ dresses will be displayed at the Velvet Room
Boutique for the People’s Choice Award.
The Velvet Room Boutique’s clients and the general public will have
a chance to choose their favourite design. Voting will take place
during this event and online.
The winner of the Peoples’ Choice Awards will receive a Davie &
Chiyo customized hand bag and will automatically advance to the next
level of competition as a finalist. (www.davieandchiyo.com)
Finalists Selection & Details
Garments will be judged on creative design, market appeal,
construction, technical ability and execution of design. Finalists
will receive a $75 Coral Moon Designs gift certificate (www.coralmoondesigns.com).
They will also have the chance to collaborate with the Velvet Room
design team to accessorize their garment (wrap, jewellery, handbag)
for the final presentation of their garment to the panel of judges
and media on the evening of May 6th, 2010.
All
Finalists will have the opportunity to sell their dresses on a
contract basis at the Velvet Room Boutique or to reserve the right
to keep the dresses for themselves.
Grand
Prize Winner
The Grand Prize winner will be announced the night of May 6th, 2010.
The
winner will become "Designer of the Month" at the Velvet Room
Boutique with their dress, designer bio, sketches and story board
showcased in a window display for a week in May. The Grand Prize
Winner will receive a Gift Package with a value of over $500.00.
To Enter,
fill out the Entry/Consent Form and send it in immediately. We will
reply with your personal contest identification number.
Clearly mark your indemnification number on all submissions. March
26th 2010 is the deadline for initial designs/sketches and bio.
